The Many Types of Oolong Tea

Oolong tea contains powerful catechin antioxidants which can help boost the immune system. It also has many other health benefits, and is an aid to losing weight.

Shui Xian oolong tea is originally from the Wuyi Mountains in China's Fujian Province. Although the top grades of Shui Xian are still produced in Wuyi Mountain, inferior grades of Shui Xian oolong tea are produced in other areas of Fujian Province. These lesser grades are the type of oolong tea that is often served in Chinese restaurants. Lesser grade Shiu Xian is characterized by a burnt flavor, but the first grades have a sweet honey taste.

Tieguanyin oolong tea originates in Anxi county of central Fujian province. Tieguanyin refers to the type of tea plant as well as the finished tea. The tieguanyin tea tree has loosely hanging branches and produces thick, dark green leaves. The tea leaves are slightly folded which give them the appearance of hands held in meditation.

Wu-long tea is a semi-oxidized (or semi-fermented) tea. Legend has it that the first wu-long tea was produced at Mount Wu Yi in Fujian province.

Of the three main types of tea – black tea, oolong tea, and green tea – oolong tea has the smallest market share. Despite its popularity in Asia, oolong tea is just starting to catch on in the west.
